Devil’s Lake State Park is located in eastern Sauk County just south of Baraboo, Wisconsin. This is the largest state park in Wisconsin and features a unique rock formation. The unique rock formation is about 500 feet high and is made of quartz created by a glacier. The lake has many cliffs, waterfalls, unique rock formations and a variety of animal and plant species. The park also offers many hiking and running trails as well as bouldering trails. Activities here include rock climbing for all levels, biking, sledding, and more!
Hike Potholes & CCC Trail Loop(Year Round)(Intermediate): The potholes hike and CCC Trail Loop is a short 2 mile loop which features an amazing split in the top of the rock face. Park in the South entrance group camping lot to find the trailhead, just a few steps North of the parking lot. The hike has a very steep climb but is well worth for the amazing view of the lake and surrounding areas.
Bouldering at Devil’s Lake State Park(Spring-Fall)(Beginner): Devils Lake State Park offers amazing views as well as a great opportunity for beginning bouldering. The rock is all beautiful purple quartz and it fills entire hillsides. One particularly popular place to climb is the east side bluff field. This is home to scenic views as well as fun, challenging problems. This is my personal favorite bouldering area in the park.
Hike the East Bluff Trail to Devil’s Doorway(Spring-Fall)(Beginner): The east Bluff trail is a short hike along the 500 foot quartzite cliffs in a beautiful southern Wisconsin state park with plenty of viewpoints overlooking the lake. As you walk up you will become mesmerized by the views of the lake. The trail also goes through an oak forest with many beautiful views.
Hike Parfrey’s Glen(Summer)(Intermediate): This hike is located next to the state park in Parfrey’s Glen. This park holds many of the same geographical features as Devil’s Lake and more. Parfrey’s Glen has many beautiful tall green trees as well as a small waterfall and river. It’s a shaded 4 miles roundtrip hike through the glen and surrounding cliffs.
Explore Pewit’s Nest State Natural Area(Summer-Fall)(Beginner): Pewit’s Nest State Natural Area is located near Devil’s Lake and features a series of small hidden waterfalls. This hike is very beautiful with amazing rock formations and a river/creek below to swim in. The hike is only 1 mile, and takes you to the top of the gorge which houses many waterfalls.
Kayak the Wisconsin River in the Dells(Spring-Fall)(Beginner): The Wisconsin river in the Dells is a little north of Devil’s Lake but offers an opportunity for many water activities. Just minutes away from the busy downtown Wisconsin Dells you can explore the idyllic Wisconsin River by water on this scenic 7.5 mile paddle. You will be treated to the beautiful sandstone cliffs of the Wisconsin River, lush green narrows, caves, and beaches along the way.
