Come to Black Canyon of the Gunnison, located in Colorado, and feel like you’ve traveled into another world. Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is one of those landscapes that truly must be seen to be believed. Unlike the sweeping expanse and enormous magnitude of the Grand Canyon, where the average distance from rim to rim is 10 miles, Black Canyon is narrow; the distance between its rims is better measured in feet instead of miles. The trails here are short and good for a weekend trip. The canyon is big enough to enjoy steep cliffs, old rocks, and craggy spires in North America.
Hike the Gunnison Route(Year-round)(Advanced): On the Gunnison Route hikers can experience an incredible scenery and take a trip down to the Gunnison River. The hike down is very steep and to protect the delicate environment only 12 people are allowed per day. The river, a surging torrent, rips down the canyon and disappears into a cataract as it makes its 240 feet per mile drop. The hike is a short 2 miles roundtrip.
Skiing Black Canyon of the Gunnison(Winter)(Beginner): Skiing beginners can get a great introduction to skiing at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. The trip is a long 12 mile out-and-back skii. It’s nestled among rolling hills north of Montrose on Colorado’s Western Slope. It’s a very quiet and peaceful place to enjoy and doesn’t experience too many crowds.
Hike to Tomichi Point and Gunnison Point Overlooks(Summer-Fall)(Beginner): This 2 mile hike gives visitors an amazing view of the sheer walls of the Black Canyon to the Gunnison River. The walls are covered in green vegetation offering a Jurassic Park feel.
Black Canyon Uplands Trail(Spring-Summer)(Beginner): On this hike visitors can witness deer, elk, wild turkeys and maybe even bears. The hike is a short 2 miles hike with wildflowers and amazing views of the Black Canyon along the rim Rock Nature Trail. To Access the Uplands Trail head for the veranda on the west side of the Visitor Center.
Warner Point Nature Trail(Summer-Fall)(Beginner): Warner Point Nature Trail is a 1.6 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail. The trail features the Gunnison river and is a perfect location to enjoy a beautiful sunset.
